KANO, ALHAJI MUHAMMED AMINU (1920–1983)

Born in Kano, Kano was a Fulani Muslim. As a young man, he completed his preliminary studies in Zaria and Bauchi. He received his teaching certificate and an advanced degree in education from the University of London (1947). Kano dedicated his political career to improving the lives of northerners, particularly the talakawa (commoners). He criticized the colonial Native Authority system. His political career started in the 1930s with his cofounding of the Bauchi General Improvement Union in 1943. He worked closely with Sa’adu Zungur and Sir Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. From 1948 to 1953, Kano was a member of the Northern Teachers’ Association. While working at a teaching center in Sokoto, he became involved with the Jami’yyar Mutanen Arewa, a cultural association. That organization became the Northern People’s Congress. In 1950, Kano formed the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) and was its leader from 1950 to 1966. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1959 to 1966. Between 1959 and 1964, he worked as the deputy government chief whip. When the NEPU and National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) formed a coalition in 1954, Kano became vice president of the NCNC. He was the minister of health from 1967 to 1974 and a member of the Constituent Assembly between 1977 and 1978. He formed the People’s Redemption Party in 1978 and was its presidential candidate. The international airport in Kano is named after him.
